Player Development Program
Objective(s)
The goal is to continue building and consolidating the existing technical and tactical foundation while introducing new concepts. Existing skills and ideas will be performed at higher speeds under increasing pressure. Self-lead training programs, including personal targets, are required, expected, and demanded by players and coaches.
Personal Values: Commitment, teamwork, empathy, respect, communication, generosity, adaptability, dedication, patience, responsibility, assertiveness, and resilience.
Phases of Play Teaching:
Offense: penetrating the defense; mastering all two v two concepts (Euro, On-ball screens, Deep, Rub, DHO, Burn Cuts); Ball Circulation (continuity and purpose; passing and cutting rules); Extending an Advantage (Drive and kick, drive and dish, extra passes out of the key, shot selection, roles and read levels); In-depth understanding of a good and bad shot; Shot and game clock awareness; Foul count awareness.
Defense: Disrupting ball movement; defensive lines (passing lines, one pass away, two pass away, etc.); stopping penetration: containing the ball, influencing the ball's direction, defending on ball screens and cutters, stopping the ball early in transition, and helping and rotating. Introduce peel and switch coverage and rotations; communication; in-depth understanding of roles and rebounding responsibilities.
Methods:
3v3 with an emphasis on generating and locating the advantage, extending, transferring, and using the advantage between players. Variety of drive and kick situations. Reading screens.
2v2 & 3v3 to explore a higher level of defensive concepts. Basic understanding of zones and press defenses. Use 2 v 0, 3 v 0, 2 v 2, 3 v 3 to promote passing ability on the move and in the play. When playing 5 v 5, the focus is on spacing and timing.
Sessions will occur on the following days and times at Mercier School:
Mondays, 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and Saturdays, noon to PM.
